On a gut level, it s obvious that plenty of Alabama football fans enjoyed what happened Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge as much as Auburn football fans were sickened by it.

At the heart of any good rivalry is basking in your enemy s misery.

Anytime Auburn loses, Alabama smiles, and vice versa, although much less frequently. There s nothing wrong with it, but in this case, it would be in Alabama s best interests for Auburn to get its act back together.

Here s why.
With Alabama ranked No. 1 and Georgia No. 3, the SEC can see a path to put two teams in the College Football Playoff. If the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs arrive for the SEC Championship Game with 12 0 records and stage another epic 60 minute affair as they did in 2012, an argument could be made to keep both in the top four.

Much will depend on what happens in the other Power 5 conferences Reuben Foster Jersey, but Alabama or Georgia will need the strongest possible resume without a conference championship to join the other in the playoff field.

That means both teams need the strongest possible Auburn to show up when Georgia goes to the Plains Nov. 11 and Alabama gets there Nov. 25.

They need the Tigers to bounce back from that devastating collapse in Death Valley. They need them to put away this shell of an Arkansas team and then, after an open date, remain unbeaten in College Station since Texas A M joined the league.

The rest of the SEC isn t helping matters when it comes to strength of schedule. While Georgia s marquee non conference win at resurgent Notre Dame remains impressive pending the next two Fighting Irish games against USC and NC State ,Florida State has done Alabama no favors by falling on its face.

Georgia would benefit from winning a road game against a 7 2 Auburn team. Alabama would be better off if Auburn beat Georgia and got to the Iron Bowl at 9 2.

Alabama per usual put down Arkansas 41 9. What else would you expect from a take no prisoners program that hasn t lost to an unranked opponent since 2007?

Despite what Gus Malzahn said after Saturday s defeat, Auburn does not control its own destiny from here because LSU with only one SEC loss at the moment owns the tiebreaker between them. Auburn does have a chance to have a say in Alabama s destiny.

So as much fun as it was for Alabama fans to watch or hear of Auburn s Death Valley meltdown, they should be among Auburn s biggest fans going forward. All the way to the Iron Bowl.
